How the activity works

1

🤝 Step 1 — Welcome at Socoa & kit up

Welcome to Socoa beach! Your state-qualified instructor meets you on the sand and gets you fitted out: a size-appropriate wetsuit, neoprene boots, and your SUP board — all provided, nothing to bring. A friendly first exchange to gauge the group's level and tailor the session accordingly. The atmosphere is relaxed, warm, and energetic from the very first moment.
2

🏖️ Step 2 — Learning on the beach

Before anyone gets near the water, the session starts on the sand — and that's where it all comes together. Your instructor teaches the SUP fundamentals: how to get on the board correctly, where to place your feet, how to position your body for balance, and how to hold and use your paddle for efficient propulsion. Within minutes, the movements start to feel natural and confidence builds fast.
3

🌊 Step 3 — Into the water & first strokes

Time to get in! In the ideal conditions of Socoa bay, you step onto your board, find your balance, and start paddling. The first wobbles are all part of the experience — and often the funniest memories. Within a few minutes, you're standing, moving forward, and steering. And that's when the panorama opens up: the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Pyrenees in the distance, the Basque cliffs all around.
4

🏄 Step 4 — Free paddling & progression

Once the basics are locked in, it's time to explore. You cruise around Socoa bay at your own pace while your instructor refines your technique, sets new challenges, and pushes you to go a little further. Turns, stops, sprints — every new move is a small win. You come back to shore two hours later already thinking about when you can come back.

FAQ

Is stand up paddleboarding suitable for complete beginners?

Yes — that's exactly what this session is designed for! The Takamaka SUP initiation is built specifically for people who have never stood on a paddleboard before. Rated 2/5 for difficulty, the teaching programme starts on the beach before anyone touches the water, so every participant enters the sea with solid foundations. No prior water sports experience needed.

Do I need to be able to swim to go paddleboarding?

Swimming ability is generally recommended for any water activity. The SUP board itself is a buoyant, stable platform and falls become less frequent after the first few minutes.

What equipment is provided for the SUP session?

Everything is included in the price: wetsuit, neoprene boots, and SUP board. No equipment needed on your side — just come in your swimwear and bring a towel for afterwards.

Does the SUP session run in bad weather or strong wind?

Wind is the main constraint in stand up paddleboarding — even a light breeze can make balance challenging for beginners.

Can we book a group SUP session for a stag party or corporate event?

Absolutely — group stand up paddleboarding is a brilliant choice for a stag or hen party, corporate team day, or team building on the Basque Coast. The shared balance challenges, the group dynamic, and the exceptional Socoa setting make it a guaranteed moment of connection and fun.
