Description

🚲 A full-day trekking bike rental in Biarritz means nine hours in the saddle — from 9am to 6pm — to explore the Basque Coast well beyond what a half-day allows.

🗺️ Bayonne and its covered market in 30 minutes along the cycling path, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its cobbled streets at the end of a beautiful Vélodyssée stretch, Hendaye and Txingudi bay along the shoreline, or the Basque hinterland toward Espelette and its peppers or the foothills of La Rhune — a full day opens up authentic itineraries that visitors on foot or by car never quite reach.

🌊 The versatile trekking bike — fitted with lighting and a luggage rack, lock and helmet included — is the perfect tool for these journeys: just as comfortable on the seafront as on the country lanes of the Basque Country.

🏖️ Takamaka shop 250 metres from Biarritz's Grande Plage, directly on the Vélodyssée, from €25 for the day.

How the activity works

1

🛒 Step 1 — 9am: collect at the shop & route advice

Book online, then head to the Takamaka shop from 9am — 250 metres from the Grande Plage. The team hands over your bike adjusted to your height, helmet, lock, and any extras you've chosen. This is also the perfect moment to ask for route recommendations: which itinerary suits your level, your goals, and the day's conditions? The team knows every path, shortcut, and viewpoint that makes a cycling day on the Basque Coast genuinely memorable.
2

🗺️ Step 2 — Morning: covering the kilometres

From the moment you leave the shop, you're on the Vélodyssée or along the seafront. Mornings are ideal for putting distance in — the cool air, low light, and light traffic on the paths make the first few hours particularly enjoyable. Whether you head north toward Bayonne or south toward Saint-Jean-de-Luz, your cruising rhythm kicks in quickly.
3

🍽️ Step 3 — Midday break & afternoon exploration

Around midday, a stop is in order — in a Basque village, on a quiet beach, or overlooking the Atlantic from a hilltop. The afternoon is your chance to explore side paths, push on toward more distant destinations (Hendaye, Espelette, the foothills of La Rhune), or simply stop wherever the mood takes you. The day is entirely yours.
4

🔁 Step 4 — 6pm: return to the shop

Back to the Takamaka shop before 6pm to return the bike. A quick check, and you're done. You head off with the good tiredness of nine hours in the saddle, everything the Basque Coast put in your legs and your eyes — and very probably the desire to do it all again tomorrow.

FAQ

What destinations can I reach in a day from Biarritz?

With 9 hours and a comfortable pace, the options from the Takamaka shop are wide: Bayonne (about 8km north via the Vélodyssée), Anglet and its sandy beaches, Saint-Jean-de-Luz (about 18km south), Hendaye and Txingudi bay (about 30km), or the inland Basque roads toward Espelette and the foothills of La Rhune. The team can advise on the best itinerary for your level on the morning of your rental.

What are the exact hours for the full-day rental?

The full-day rental runs from 9h30am to 6pm — giving you 9 hours in the saddle. A generous slot that lets you set off in the cool of the morning (the best time to ride) and return at a relaxed pace in the late afternoon.

What is the Vélodyssée and how much of it can I cover in a day?

The Vélodyssée (EV1) is the great Atlantic cycling route from Saint-Nazaire to Hendaye — 1,300km along the French Atlantic coast. The Takamaka shop sits directly on this route. In a full day from Biarritz, you can reach Bayonne to the north (about 8km) or Hendaye to the south (about 30km), staying on secure, well-signposted paths with Atlantic and Basque scenery all the way.

What's included in the full-day rental and what extras are available?

The rental includes the trekking bike, a lock, and a helmet. Optional extras are available at additional cost: a basket for your belongings, panniers for luggage, a child seat for young children, and a phone holder for navigation. Specify your options when booking online.

Do you need to be fit to rent a trekking bike for the full day?

Not at all — the trekking bike is designed for everyone, and the Basque Coast offers routes for all levels, from the flat coastal paths to the more rolling inland roads. If you don't cycle regularly, stick to the coastal cycling paths (seafront, Vélodyssée) which are flat and manageable. The inland Basque roads are more challenging but perfectly doable for a general level of fitness.

Can we rent multiple bikes for a family or group day?

Yes — multi-bike rental is available and makes this the ideal option for a family cycling day from Biarritz. For group bookings or to check child bike availability on the full-day formula, contact the Takamaka shop directly on 05.59.24.11.84.
