Description

🚴 Gravel bike rental in Biarritz is the answer for every cyclist who wants to explore the Basque Country without the limits of tarmac — those who look at the sunken lanes between Basque villages and wonder where they lead, those who don't let the Basque rain stop them from riding, those who seek two-wheeled adventure beyond the classic routes.

🌿 The Lapierre Crosshill 3.0 — Lapierre's first gravel bike, built to travel and to have fun — is the perfect tool for that. Its Shimano GRX Mix 2×10-speed transmission with 11–34T cassette handles every terrain and every gradient. Its hydraulic disc brakes deliver the power and modulation that Basque conditions — often wet, sometimes muddy — demand.

🗺️ From Biarritz, in a 8-hour gravel ride, the possible itineraries shift completely: the white tracks toward Ainhoa and Sare, the gravel roads of the hinterland, the mixed passages between Bidart and the Guéthary heights — where the road bike turns back, the Crosshill keeps going.

How the activity works

1

🛒 Step 1 — Book & collect at the shop

Book your ride online at the Takamaka website — specify your frame size . At the Takamaka shop (13 avenue de la Marne, Biarritz), the team will hand you the Lapierre Crosshill 3.0, adjust the saddle to your size, and explain the bike's features. It's also a good time to ask for route advice based on your skill level and the day's conditions.
2

🚴 Step 2 — Getting started: gravel rides differently

The Crosshill is neither a road bike nor a mountain bike. The position is more upright than a road bike, the tyres are wider, and the handling on tarmac more stable. A few minutes on the cycling path or road to find your bearings — then the terrain changes and the gravel bike reveals its full value.
3

🌿 Step 3 — The adventure: where the road ends

A 8-hour day is ideal for a mixed loop from Biarritz: a few kilometres of road to reach the first tracks, then the gravel itinerary opens up — white roads, forest paths, country lanes, muddy or dry passages depending on the weather. The Crosshill takes it all, the hydraulic discs reassure on the technical descents, and the GRX handles the steep climbs without any steering stress.
4

🔁 Step 4 — Back to the shop

Back to the Takamaka shop at the end of your slot. Quick check, bike returned. You leave with images of the Basque Country that the road bike would never have given you — and the desire to come back for the full-day rental.

FAQ

What exactly is a gravel bike and how is it different from a road bike?

A gravel bike is designed to ride on all terrain types — tarmac, gravel, dirt tracks, white roads. Compared to a road bike, it has wider tyres (better grip and cushioning on varied terrain), a more stable and comfortable geometry, and in the Crosshill's case, hydraulic disc brakes that work in all weather conditions. It's slower than a pure road bike on tarmac, but it can go anywhere a road bike can't.

Why are hydraulic disc brakes important in the Basque Country?

The Basque Country is well known for its rainfall — and the tracks and roads of the hinterland can be wet or muddy even in summer. Hydraulic disc brakes deliver consistent stopping power regardless of surface conditions, whereas standard rim brakes can lose 50–60% of their effectiveness on a wet rim. On the technical descents of Basque tracks, this is a genuine safety difference, not just a commercial argument.

What is the Shimano GRX transmission?

Shimano GRX is Shimano's component range specifically developed for gravel bikes — drivetrain, brakes, and derailleurs built for mixed terrain and wet conditions. GRX offers ergonomic levers for drop bars, derailleurs robust against mud and gravel, and gear ratios suited to steep gradients. It's the benchmark transmission on the gravel market — its presence on the Crosshill guarantees reliability and suitability for the Basque terrain.
