Description

🚴 Gravel bike rentals in Biarritz are the answer for all cyclists who want to explore the Basque Country beyond the confines of paved roads—those who gaze at the winding paths between Basque villages and wonder where they lead, those who aren't afraid of the Basque rain and still want to ride, those seeking two-wheeled adventure off the beaten track.

🌿 The Lapierre Crosshill 3.0—Lapierre's first gravel bike, designed for touring and fun—is the perfect tool for the job. Its Shimano GRX Mix 2x10 drivetrain with an 11-34T cassette covers all terrains and gradients. Its hydraulic disc brakes offer the power and modulation that Basque conditions—often wet, sometimes muddy—demand.

🗺️ From Biarritz, the possible routes change dramatically: white gravel paths towards Ainhoa and Sare, gravel roads in the hinterland, mixed terrain between Bidart and the hills above Guéthary—where road cycling recedes, Crosshill continues.

How the activity works

1

🛒 Step 1 — Book & collect at the shop

Reserve your week online at the Takamaka website — specify your frame size. At the Takamaka shop (13 avenue de la Marne, Biarritz), the team hands over the Lapierre Crosshill 3.0, sets the saddle to your measurements, and walks you through the machine. It's also the ideal moment to ask for itinerary advice based on your level and the day's conditions.
2

🚴 Step 2 — Getting started: gravel rides differently

The Crosshill is neither a road bike nor a mountain bike. The position is more upright than a road bike, the tyres are wider, and the handling on tarmac more stable. A few minutes on the cycling path or road to find your bearings — then the terrain changes and the gravel bike reveals its full value.
3

🌿 Step 3 — The adventure: where the road ends

It’s the perfect week for racking up the miles on diverse routes—gravel tracks, woodland trails, country roads, and sections that might be muddy or dry depending on the day's weather. The Crosshill takes it all in stride; hydraulic disc brakes provide confidence on technical descents, while the GRX groupset handles steep climbs without requiring extra effort to manage the bike.
4

🔁 Step 4 — Back to the shop

Return to the Takamaka shop at the end of the week. A quick bike check, then hand it back. You leave with images of the Basque Country that a road bike could never have given you—and the urge to come back for a full day.

FAQ

What exactly is a gravel bike and how is it different from a road bike?

A gravel bike is designed to ride on all terrain types — tarmac, gravel, dirt tracks, white roads. Compared to a road bike, it has wider tyres (better grip and cushioning on varied terrain), a more stable and comfortable geometry, and in the Crosshill's case, hydraulic disc brakes that work in all weather conditions. It's slower than a pure road bike on tarmac, but it can go anywhere a road bike can't.

Does difficulty 4/5 mean this bike is reserved for experienced cyclists?

The 4/5 difficulty rating reflects the potentially demanding terrain the gravel bike gives you access to — technical tracks, muddy passages, gravel descents — not the difficulty of riding the bike itself. The Crosshill is intuitive to handle. However, gravel itineraries in the Basque Country often include tracks with elevation gain and varied surfaces that require a basic level of cycling practice. If you've never ridden off-road, stay on paved roads or ask the team for advice.

Why are hydraulic disc brakes important in the Basque Country?

The Basque Country is well known for its rainfall — and the tracks and roads of the hinterland can be wet or muddy even in summer. Hydraulic disc brakes deliver consistent stopping power regardless of surface conditions, whereas standard rim brakes can lose 50–60% of their effectiveness on a wet rim. On the technical descents of Basque tracks, this is a genuine safety difference, not just a commercial argument.

What is the Shimano GRX transmission?

Shimano GRX is Shimano's component range specifically developed for gravel bikes — drivetrain, brakes, and derailleurs built for mixed terrain and wet conditions. GRX offers ergonomic levers for drop bars, derailleurs robust against mud and gravel, and gear ratios suited to steep gradients. It's the benchmark transmission on the gravel market — its presence on the Crosshill guarantees reliability and suitability for the Basque terrain.
