Description

🏄 The 5-session relaxed surf camp in Biarritz is the formula for those who want their holiday week to also be a genuine surf week — not a quickly-forgotten initiation, but a solid progression, built day by day, on the waves of the Côte des Basques.

🌊 Monday to Friday, a 1h30 session every day with the same qualified instructor in a group of maximum 8 students. The pace is comfortable — an hour and a half, then the beach, the Basque Country, life. This is the camp for progressing without exhaustion, for learning while enjoying, for returning to the same wave each morning and realising you're handling it a little better than yesterday.

🎯 In five sessions, what the body absorbs is considerable: balance becomes automatic, wave reading sharpens, trajectories build, and the first manoeuvres begin to emerge. A participant who starts as a complete beginner on Monday morning is a surfer with intentions by Friday evening. That's the pedagogical commitment Takamaka has held for 30 years at the Côte des Basques.

⚠️ 5-day camps start on Mondays only. Book your date online — the team confirms each lesson time based on the day's conditions.

How the activity works

1

🛒 Step 1 — Book your Monday & lesson time confirmation

Reserve your camp online at the Takamaka website, selecting a Monday as your start date — 5-day camps start on Mondays only. The booking slot shows 2pm, but this is not your lesson time. The team will contact you to confirm each session's time, timed around the day's conditions. Contact them on 05 59 24 11 84 or at team1@takamaka.fr if you need details before arriving.

🏖️ Step 2 — Monday: first contact, first group, first moves

Head to the Côte des Basques on Monday morning. Kit up, meet your instructor, groups formed by level. On the sand: warm-up, basic theory, safety guidelines. Then into the water — with your softboard and your instructor staying alongside you. Monday's goal is simple: feel comfortable in the water, catch the first whitewater, understand the logic of the wave. Your instructor watches carefully for what needs correcting the following day.
3

🌊 Step 3 — Tuesday to Thursday: day-by-day progress

Each morning you return with what you learnt the day before. Your instructor knows exactly where you are — they correct, refine, introduce new exercises. Mid-week is where progress becomes visible and exhilarating: balance becomes automatic, you start choosing your waves, managing your line, anticipating. These three middle days are what turn the experience into real learning.
4

🎯 Step 4 — Friday: review, wave celebration and what's next

Friday, final session. Your instructor runs through your week of progression — from your Monday level to Friday's, the difference is real, concrete, and often surprising. They advise on next steps: come back for an intensive camp, sign up again next year, hire a board for the rest of the trip. You leave the Côte des Basques knowing you'll surf again

Why Learn to Surf with Takamaka?

🏅 In Biarritz, surf schools are plentiful. But choosing where to learn means choosing more than a board and a beach — it means choosing a teaching approach, a team of instructors, a structure that genuinely knows this coastline and what it demands.
🌊 Instructors hold state qualifications and know every wave configuration at the Côte des Basques according to the season, tide, wind, and swell. They know which sandbank is best for beginners that day, which time window offers the calmest conditions, when a session can start and when it's better to wait. This fine-tuned reading of local conditions — only possible through long-term presence on the same spot — is the guarantee that every session of the camp is optimised for your progress, not left to chance.
🎯 The small group format of maximum 8 students isn't a marketing argument — it's a deliberate pedagogical choice. In the water, an instructor following 8 students can correct, push, encourage, and individualise. An instructor managing 20 is doing supervision. At Takamaka, the relaxed camp is a real camp: every student is seen, followed, and made to improve.

FAQ

Why must the 5-day camp start on a Monday?

The relaxed camp runs Monday to Friday to guarantee the week's pedagogical coherence. Your instructor builds your progression over 5 consecutive days — starting on a Wednesday wouldn't allow the same continuity. If you're arriving in Biarritz mid-week, you can book the following Monday, or consider the 3-day mini camp which offers more flexibility.

What's the difference between the relaxed camp and the intensive camp?

Both camps last a week (Monday–Friday) and take place on the same beach with the same instructors. The difference is the pace: the relaxed camp offers 1 session of 1h30 per day — ideal for progressing while still enjoying the stay. The intensive camp offers 2 sessions of 1h30 per day — for those who want to maximise progress and put surfing at the heart of their week. If this is your first camp experience, the relaxed format is the natural choice.

Why does the booking show 2pm if that isn't the lesson time?

Surfing depends on tides and wave conditions that change every day. Rather than imposing a fixed slot that might not match the best window of the day, Takamaka times each session around the best available conditions. The 2pm shown is the online booking slot. The team communicates your real lesson time — contact them on 05 59 24 11 84 or at team1@takamaka.fr after booking.

What level can I expect to reach after 5 days on the relaxed camp?

In 5 daily sessions with a consistent instructor, a complete beginner can expect to stand up consistently on whitewater and first formed waves, manage their line on the wave, read conditions and choose rides, and begin the first elements of technique (arm position, hip rotation, eye line). It's not yet the level for independent surfing in the line-up — but it's the level from which surfing becomes genuinely enjoyable and repeatable.
