How the activity works

1

🤝 Step 1 — Arrival & meet the canoe

As soon as the young paddlers arrive in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, they meet their Takamaka guide — and more importantly, their canoe. The va'a, with its distinctive outrigger float, makes an instant impression. The guide introduces its Polynesian history, explains how it works, and runs through the basics in a fun, accessible way. By the time they're done, the kids are already itching to get on the water.
2

🎓 Step 2 — Initiation in the bay

Into the calm, sheltered waters of the bay for the first paddle strokes! Each child finds their place on board, learns to synchronise their movements with the rest of the crew, and feels that first magical glide as the canoe picks up speed. The guide encourages every paddler at their own pace, making sure no one gets left behind — and everyone gets that grin on their face.
3

🌊 Step 3 — The paddle & the adventure

With paddles in hand and confidence building, it's time to explore! The crew sets off across the bay, following the Basque shoreline, tackling the odd small wave, and experiencing the Atlantic from a perspective most holidaymakers never get. Laughter, triumphant shouts, and wide-eyed wonder at the scenery turn this into the kind of hour kids talk about for years.
4

🐙 Step 4 — Optional squid fishing (sunset session) & return

For those lucky enough to join the evening session, a special moment awaits: squid fishing at sunset, golden light on the Atlantic and a fishing line in hand. A rare, playful, and wonderfully memorable experience before heading back to shore — exhausted, happy, and already planning the next time.

FAQ

Do children need to be able to swim?

The outrigger canoe's lateral float makes it highly stable and significantly reduces the risk of capsizing. CE-certified life jackets are provided. That said, swimming ability is generally recommended for any sea activity — please confirm the exact requirements with the Takamaka team before booking.

Is the outrigger canoe suitable for children who are nervous around water?

The bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz offers calm, sheltered waters perfectly suited to a gentle introduction. The outrigger canoe is known for its exceptional stability thanks to its lateral float. Our qualified guides adapt the pace and level to the group — including more hesitant children. Feel free to mention any concerns when booking so the team can prepare accordingly.

Can children join the sunset squid fishing session?

Yes! The sunset session with squid fishing is available for under-18s — and it's often their favourite part of the whole experience. Subject to seasonal availability and weather conditions, we recommend contacting Takamaka to check whether the evening slot is available during your stay.

Can we book the canoe for a group of children — birthday party, summer camp, school trip?

Absolutely! The Hawaiian outrigger canoe is a perfect group activity for young people — creative birthday parties, summer camp outings, sports clubs, or school trips to the coast. Each canoe carries 3 or 4 young paddlers, and multiple canoes can go out together. For group bookings, contact Takamaka directly on 05.59.24.11.84 or at biarritz@takamaka.fr.
