Description

🏴‍☠️ The Takamaka children's treasure hunt in Biarritz is the family activity kids ask to do again the very next day — because it transforms a city stroll into a genuine pirate adventure, with a real storyline, real clues, and a real treasure at the end.

🦜 It all begins at the Takamaka shop in the town centre, where the family collects the adventure kit: a map of Biarritz, a clue book telling the story of Tako and Maka, the legendary Biarritz pirates of the Basque Unicorn, and sealed envelopes to open along the trail. It's Peio the parrot, the pirates' loyal companion, who guides the children from clue to clue — all the way to the hidden treasure.

🗺️ The trail unfolds through the streets of Biarritz — an unusual and memorable way for families to visit the town centre, discover its landmarks, lanes, and secrets through play. Children read the clues, seek out the locations, solve the enigmas — parents follow the adventure (and occasionally offer a quiet nudge). 🎁 At the end, a surprise gift awaits the adventurers. From just €7 — the most affordable activity in the Takamaka catalogue, and one of the most memorable for children.

How the activity works

1

🛒 Step 1 — Book & collect the kit at the Takamaka shop

Reserve your treasure hunt online at the Takamaka website. Head to the Takamaka shop (13 avenue de la Marne, Biarritz) to collect the adventure kit: the Biarritz map, the Tako & Maka clue book, and the sealed envelopes. The Takamaka team gives the starting instructions — and the adventure begins the moment you step outside.
2

🦜 Step 2 — The start: Peio takes the lead

Unicorn, Tako and Maka have scattered clues across the city. Peio the parrot guides the children — their riddles lead from location to location through the Biarritz streets that few visitors ever truly explore. First envelope, first clue, first moment of children searching, finding, bursting with excitement.
3

🗺️ Step 3 — The trail: Biarritz as a playground

Envelope by envelope, the trail reveals Biarritz — its lanes, its squares, its architectural details, its Atlantic views. The children read the clues and seek out the locations. Parents discover their town (or holiday destination) from an angle they'd never taken before. Each clue solved brings the treasure closer.
4

🎁 Step 4 — The treasure & the surprise gift

The final clue leads to Tako and Maka's treasure. The young adventurers have completed their mission — and a surprise gift awaits to mark the victory. Back to the Takamaka shop to return the kit and share the stories. A Biarritz outing that becomes an unforgettable holiday memory.

Why choose Takamaka ?

🏅 There aren't dozens of ways to make children genuinely discover Biarritz memorably. A guided tour bores them within ten minutes. A free-form walk holds their attention for two streets before they ask to go back. The Tako & Maka treasure hunt solves this problem elegantly: a pirate storyline rooted in local history, clues suited to their age, the thrill of sealed envelopes to open, and the promise of a surprise gift at the end — children are the heroes of the adventure from start to finish.
🦜 Tako and Maka aren't characters invented for the occasion — they're the Takamaka mascots, present in the brand's universe since its founding. This treasure hunt is the product of 30 years of presence in Biarritz and an intimate knowledge of the city that makes it possible to build a trail through real Biarritz locations with a fresh perspective — that of adventure.
💶 At €7 per family, it's also the most financially accessible activity in the entire Takamaka catalogue — and one of the most memory-making. Children remember the treasure hunt long after they've forgotten the Musée de la Mer.

FAQ

Do parents take part or just accompany?

The treasure hunt is a fully autonomous family activity — no guide. Children are front and centre: they read the clues, seek out the locations, and solve the enigmas. Parents accompany, keep everyone safe, and can give a nudge if the children get stuck on a clue. The activity is designed so children are the heroes — but the trail is also a wonderful discovery of Biarritz for the adults too.

Who are Tako and Maka?

Tako and Maka are the Takamaka mascots — and in this treasure hunt's legend, the most feared Biarritz pirates of the entire Gulf of Gascony, captains of the Basque Unicorn. Their story and adventures have been scattered through the streets of Biarritz to be uncovered by the bravest children. Peio the parrot is their messenger — and the one who will guide you from clue to clue.

What's the difference between the children's treasure hunt and the adult trail?

Both activities are offered by Takamaka at the same starting price (€7) and take place in the streets of Biarritz with a provided kit. The children's treasure hunt (Tako & Maka) is built on a playful, joyful pirate storyline, with clues suited to children and a surprise gift at the end. The adult trail (The legend of the pierced rock) is a darker, more complex narrative adventure designed for adults. In Biarritz with the family, both can be combined — children on one side, adults on the other!
