How the activity works

1

🤝 Step 1 — Welcome at Socoa & youth-sized kit

Welcome to Socoa beach! The Takamaka instructor greets the group with energy and warmth, makes the introductions, and fits everyone out with their own properly sized wetsuit, neoprene boots, and SUP board — all provided, nothing to bring. A relaxed and enthusiastic atmosphere from the very start, making sure even the shiest participants feel comfortable before anyone gets near the water.
2

🏖️ Step 2 — The fundamentals on the sand

Before the water, the beach! The instructor teaches the key moves on dry land: how to get on the board without rushing, where to place your feet, how to position your shoulders for balance, and how to hold the paddle to move efficiently. Clear explanations, lively demonstrations, age-appropriate exercises — within a few minutes, every child can visualise exactly what they're about to do on the water.
3

🌊 Step 3 — The big moment: standing on the water!

The moment the whole group has been waiting for — and one that's guaranteed to be unforgettable. Young paddlers wade into the calm Socoa waters, climb onto their boards, and attempt to stand. Those first seconds upright on the Atlantic, paddle in hand, the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz stretching out ahead — it's a one-of-a-kind feeling unlike anything else. Falls are part of the adventure, laughter even more so, and progress is often surprisingly fast.
4

🏄 Step 4 — Free paddling & friendly challenges

Once they're standing, the real fun begins! The instructor introduces progressive challenges — turns, races, slalom courses — while kids and teens explore their own limits, take on each other, and grow in confidence on the water. Two hours after first stepping onto the sand, they leave standing tall, proud, and already looking forward to coming back.

FAQ

Is stand up paddleboarding difficult for a beginner child?

Children and teens often pick up SUP faster than adults — their lower centre of gravity, natural flexibility, and lack of self-consciousness make them surprisingly quick learners. The Takamaka initiation is rated 2/5 for difficulty and starts with a beach learning phase, so everyone arrives on the water with solid foundations. Early falls are part of the adventure — and they usually produce more laughter than anything else!

Do children need to be able to swim for the SUP session?

Swimming ability is generally recommended for any water activity. The SUP board is stable and floats in all circumstances, and the instructor stays close to the group throughout.

What equipment is provided for the children's SUP initiation?

Everything is included in the €29 rate: a properly sized wetsuit, neoprene boots, and a SUP board. Nothing to bring on the equipment side — just come in swimwear under the wetsuit and bring a towel for afterwards.

Does a parent need to be in the water or on a board with the child?

All outings are supervised by a state-certified instructor who oversees the group on the water. The presence of a parent or accompanying adult on the board or within the group is not specified as mandatory.

Does the children's SUP session run in bad weather or strong wind?

Wind is the main challenge in stand-up paddleboarding; even a light breeze can make balancing difficult for beginners, and even more so for children. In adverse conditions, Takamaka may postpone or cancel the session.
