How the activity works

1

🤝 Step 1 — Welcome & day conditions briefing

Head to Sainte-Barbe (near Saint-Jean-de-Luz) or other spots along the Basque coast with the Takamaka team. First key step: the guide assesses the day's swell conditions and confirms the location—prioritizing Sainte-Barbe, or switching to another coastal spot if conditions require it. Equipment is handed out, followed by a clear briefing on safety and how to handle the raft. If the waves don't cooperate, the guide presents three alternative options, and the group makes a collective choice. Either way, two hours of action in the surf await you.
2

🌊 Step 2 — Into the water & first wave contact

Out to the Atlantic! The whole group boards the raft and paddles toward the open ocean, facing the waves of Sainte-Barbe. The first waves come fast — and with them, the first collective shout. The guide positions the raft to catch the swell, and the sensations kick in: rise, glide, impact, laughter. The raft takes everything, and everyone wants more.
3

🏄 Step 3 — Wave after wave: collective exhilaration

The rhythm sets in. Paddles, wave, shout, glide, reposition — and repeat. Every wave is different, every impact is a surprise, every rise is a rush. The energy on board builds steadily: the shyest members become the boldest, laughter erupts continuously, and what started as an activity becomes one of the best shared memories of the entire Basque Coast trip.
4

🎉 Step 4 — Back to shore & unforgettable

After 2 hours riding Atlantic waves, the group hits the beach in an explosion of good humour. Still soaked, still buzzing, still replaying the best waves — that's the mark of a successful session. Takamaka's wave rafting in Saint-Jean-de-Luz is exactly the kind of experience people talk about for years.

FAQ

What exactly is wave rafting?

Wave rafting is surfing ocean waves in a group inflatable raft — the whole crew boards a single craft and charges the Atlantic swell together. Unlike traditional surfing, no prior skill is needed: the raft is stable and manoeuvrable, the guide handles the positioning in the waves, and all you have to do is hold on and enjoy the ride — and scream as loud as you like.

What happens if there are no waves on the day of my booking?

This is what makes this product genuinely distinctive — and Takamaka's approach genuinely transparent. The activity depends on swell conditions. If there are no waves on the day, Takamaka will offer you a choice of three on-site alternatives at no extra charge: Hawaiian outrigger canoe, sea kayaking, or stand up paddleboarding. Your day stays a great water adventure whatever the ocean decides to do.

Do I need surfing or rafting experience?

Neither — that's the whole point. Wave rafting is accessible to everyone with no prior experience, rated 2/5 for difficulty. That's exactly what makes it unique: it gives anyone the chance to feel the energy of Basque waves without ever having stood on a surfboard. The guide handles everything — your only job is to enjoy the ride.

Where does wave rafting take place? What is Sainte-Barbe?

Sessions take place primarily at Sainte-Barbe, on the Saint-Jean-de-Luz side — one of the most exposed and respected spots on the Basque Coast for its consistent, quality waves. Depending on the day's swell conditions, the Takamaka team may choose other coastal spots to optimise the session.

Is wave rafting good for a stag party or group outing?

It's arguably the most festive and collective activity in the entire Takamaka catalogue — making it one of the best options for a stag or hen party, birthday celebration, or group outing on the Basque Coast. Thrills, laughter, shared emotions, and an electric atmosphere guaranteed. For group bookings, contact the team on 05.59.24.11.84 or at biarritz@takamaka.fr.

What's the difference between wave rafting and river rafting?

River rafting (on the Nive) takes place in freshwater rapids, with technical passages, aquatic hiking, and cliff jumping. Wave rafting takes place in the ocean, riding Atlantic swells from the coastal spots of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Two radically different experiences: one is a nature adventure on a wild river, the other is a full-immersion encounter with the power of the Basque ocean.
