How the activity works

1

📅 Step 1 — Session time confirmed a few days before

Unlike most activities, the exact time of your kayaking session is confirmed with you a few days in advance — giving the Takamaka team time to assess sea, wind, and current conditions and choose the ideal slot for the children's outing. A quick call or message, and it's all confirmed. A small detail that makes a big difference to the quality and safety of the experience.
2

🤝 Step 2 — Welcome, kit up & first strokes Meet the Takamaka

Meet the Takamaka guide at Saint-Jean-de-Luz! Young explorers get introduced to their kayaks and learn the essential moves: how to sit, how to hold the paddle, how to balance. A few minutes in the calm bay waters and the kayak already feels familiar — excitement takes over from any nerves, and they're ready to head out.
3

🌊 Step 3 — The exploration: rocks, cliffs & boats

Adventure time! Young kayakers set off across the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and start discovering what most holidaymakers never see from the shore: rocks just below the waterline, Basque cliffs from sea level, hidden coves, and the moored boats they thread through with a skill that quickly becomes a source of genuine pride. Every paddle stroke opens up a new view.
4

🏁 Step 4 — Back to shore & a quiet kind of pride

As the session ends, young paddlers return to the shore carrying something hard to name but easy to see in their eyes — the quiet pride of having pushed themselves, explored somewhere new, and genuinely mastered something. Kayaks returned, stories already forming, the Basque Coast will never quite look the same again.

FAQ

Do children need to be able to swim?

Swimming ability is generally recommended for any open-water sea activity. The CE-certified life jacket provided ensures buoyancy in all circumstances.

Single or double kayak for a child — which is best?

For beginners or younger children, a double kayak is often the better choice — more stable, and the shared paddling means reassurance and mutual support. A single kayak suits older teens looking for a more independent, self-directed adventure. The Takamaka team can advise on the best option for your child when you book.

What's the difference between sea kayaking and the Hawaiian outrigger canoe for under-18s?

Both activities take place in the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz at the same rate (€29 per child), but the experience is very different. The Hawaiian outrigger is a 3-to-4-person crew craft — sociable, team-focused, with a strong Hawaiian cultural dimension. The sea kayak is solo or in tandem — more about personal exploration, independence, and direct contact with the wild coastline. Two wonderful, complementary ways to experience the sea in the Basque Country!

Can we book multiple kayaks for a group of children — summer camp, birthday, school trip?

Absolutely — sea kayaking is a brilliant group activity for young people, whether for a summer camp, a creative birthday, or a coastal school trip. Multiple kayaks can head out together. For group bookings, contact the Takamaka team directly on 05.59.24.11.84 or at biarritz@takamaka.fr to organise a tailored outing.
