How the activity works

1

🤝 Step 1 — Welcome & introduction to the canoe

Welcome to Saint-Jean-de-Luz! Your Takamaka guide welcomes you by the water and introduces you to your craft: the Hawaiian outrigger canoe—or va'a—a Polynesian vessel that combines stability with maneuverability. You will learn about its history and structure, as well as the fundamental paddling techniques, before hitting the water.
2

🎓 Step 2 — Initiation in the bay

Time to get on the water! Your 3-to-4-person crew climbs aboard and begins the initiation in the sheltered bay. Paddle coordination, crew synchronisation, reading the wind and small waves — within minutes, you find your collective rhythm and the gliding sensation on the Atlantic takes over completely.
3

🌊 Step 3 — Paddle & explore

Once you've found your flow, it's time to explore. Your guide leads the way across the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, revealing the Basque coastline from a perspective few visitors ever get. Brave the waves if you're feeling bold, or simply glide across the Atlantic and let the scenery do the rest. Evening sessions turn this into pure magic at golden hour.
4

🐙 Step 4 — Squid fishing (evening session) & return

On evening outings, the highlight of the night arrives: squid fishing at dusk, a beloved local tradition that's as entertaining as it is rewarding. Grab your line, switch on your light, and enjoy a uniquely convivial moment on the water before heading back with your catch, your crew, and a story worth telling.

FAQ

What exactly is a Hawaiian outrigger canoe?

The Hawaiian outrigger canoe, or *va'a*, is a traditional Polynesian vessel featuring a side float. This lateral float provides remarkable stability—even in waves—making the craft accessible to beginners while offering an authentic experience on the water. It is an ancestral mode of transport for Pacific peoples that has been revived as a modern water sport and outdoor activity.

Do I need paddling or sailing experience?

No experience at all is needed. Each session starts with a thorough initiation in the sheltered bay, led by your qualified guide. Within minutes you'll have the core strokes down and be ready to enjoy the full paddle. The outrigger canoe is designed to be welcoming from the very first session.

How many people fit in one canoe?

Each canoe holds 3 to 4 people — an intimate crew that builds real team spirit on the water. Perfect for a family outing, a close group of friends, or a couple joining other participants for a shared adventure.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Sea and wind conditions always come first. If the weather or swell is unfavourable, Takamaka may cancel or reschedule the session.

Can I buy a canoe session as a gift?

Absolutely — Takamaka offers gift vouchers for this activity, available to purchase directly online. A brilliant idea for a birthday, hen party, anniversary, or anyone who loves the sea and trying something genuinely different.
