Description

🏄 A surf lesson in Biarritz is something many people have wanted to do for years and never quite got round to — because they think it's too hard, too dangerous, or that you have to be athletic. The Takamaka surf initiation at the Côte des Basques is here to prove otherwise.

🌊 In a 90-minute discovery session, you learn the basics on the sand (stance, balance, push-up), then enter the water with your softboard and qualified instructor who stays with you at every moment. The whitewater at the Côte des Basques is gentle and perfect for beginners — and the first sensations of riding a wave often come within the first minutes in the water.

🎯 The Takamaka surf school works in small groups of maximum 8 students per instructor — guaranteeing real, personalised attention. Lessons are organised by level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and age.

🏖️ The session takes place at the Côte des Basques, one of Europe's most legendary surf beaches. In the off-season (September to December and March to June), the waves are often more consistent, the beaches less crowded, and the experience more intimate and authentic than at the height of summer. €45 per person — book online and the team will confirm the exact time of your lesson based on the day's conditions.

How the activity works

1

🛒 Step 1 — Book online & lesson time

Book your initiation online at the Takamaka website. The booking slot shows 2pm — but this is not your lesson time: it's simply the online booking slot for the day. The Takamaka team will contact you to confirm the exact time of your session, timed around the day's tides and wave conditions. Call them on 05 59 24 11 84 if you need quick confirmation.
2

🏖️ Step 2 — Arrival at the Côte des Basques & kit up

Head to the Côte des Basques at the confirmed time to meet the Takamaka team. Your instructors welcome you, kit you out (wetsuit and softboard), and form the groups by level. Before anyone touches the water, the session starts on the beach: warm-up, theory on the sand, basic positions, and safety guidelines. A phase many surf schools rush through — at Takamaka, it's part of the lesson.
3

🌊 Step 3 — Into the water! First waves with your instructor

This is the moment you've been waiting for. You enter the water with your softboard and your instructor, who stays with you at every moment — by your side to push you into the right waves, correct you in real time, and reassure you when doubt creeps in. The Côte des Basques whitewater is gentle and forgiving, perfect for first attempts. Many participants stand up on their first wave in this very first lesson. That feeling doesn't leave you.
4

🎯 Step 4 — Debrief & what comes next

At the end of the session, your instructor runs through your progress, answers your questions, and advises what to do next — 3-day mini course, 5-day camp, or simply come back for another session. An hour and a half after your first contact with the Basque wave, you'll know whether you're a surfer or not. The answer is almost always: yes.

Why choose Takamaka ?

🏅 Biarritz isn't just a town on the Atlantic coast — it's Europe's surf capital, the place where surfing was introduced to the continent in the 1950s, and the Côte des Basques is one of the most iconic waves on the continent. Taking your first surf lesson here isn't just learning a sport — it's entering a history, a culture, a global community.
🌊 The Takamaka surf school has been based on this legendary beach for 30 years. Its qualified instructors know every sandbank, every current, every tidal shift that changes the way the waves break that day. This isn't an industrial surf school that sends 50 beginners into the water at once — it's a human-scale operation, groups of maximum 8 students, where your real progression and your safety are the priority.

FAQ

Where exactly does the lesson take place — where do we meet?

The lesson takes place at the Côte des Basques, Biarritz's legendary surf beach. The exact meeting point (beach entrance, car park) will be confirmed by the Takamaka team when they communicate your lesson time.

Do I need any surfing experience to join?

No — the 1h30 initiation is open to complete beginners, to those who have never touched a surfboard in their life. Lessons are organised by each participant's level: if you're a complete beginner, you'll be with other beginners, with a qualified instructor in the water with you at every moment. Intermediate and advanced levels also exist for more experienced participants.

Can I continue with a surf camp after this initiation?

Yes — and that's often exactly what participants do after their first session. The Takamaka school offers in the off-season a 3-day mini camp (3 × 1h30, €125/person) and a 5-day relaxed camp (5 × 1h30, €190/person). These camps allow real progression and build on what you learn in the initiation. 5-day camps start on Mondays only.
