How the activity works

1

🤝 Step 1 — Hendaye: welcome, kit up & briefing

Meet the Takamaka team in Hendaye, just 30 minutes from Biarritz. Instructors welcome you, fit you out, and walk you through the day's itinerary. Safety briefing, paddle technique, and sea guidelines: everything is covered before you touch the water so every paddler sets off with confidence. Then the channel opens up ahead — and the expedition begins.
2

🌊 Step 2 — Channel & open sea: finding your rhythm

Kayaks slide out of Hendaye's sheltered channel and push into open water. Paddles find their cadence, bodies settle into the motion, and the Basque coast begins to reveal itself in all its wildness from sea level. Course set for Cap Higer — that mythical headland on the French-Spanish border that marks the entry into the most unspoilt stretches of the coastline.
3

🦅 Step 3 — Cap Higer & coves: the heart of the expedition

Beyond Cap Higer, the coastline changes character entirely. Coves open between the rocks like well-kept secrets — unreachable on foot, they exist only for those who arrive by sea. Folds of pink limestone rise from the water, seabirds circle above the reefs, hidden flora between the rocks reveals its colours. You thread through passages, paddle, observe, and let yourself be carried by a coastline that belongs entirely to itself. Lunch is taken here, in scenery that feels outside of time.
4

🏁 Step 4 — Return to Hendaye: the expedition complete

As the day draws to a close, the group turns back toward Hendaye. Paddles have found their cruising rhythm, bodies carry a good kind of tiredness, and every paddler's eyes hold images of coves, pink limestone, and seabirds that few holidaymakers ever get to see. Return to the start point with the rare satisfaction of having genuinely explored something exceptional.

FAQ

Do I need sea kayaking experience for the full day?

The difficulty is rated 1/5, which may surprise for a 7-hour day in open water. The activity is accessible to complete beginners thanks to state-qualified instructor supervision and an itinerary that builds progressively from the sheltered channel to more open sections. If you have no prior water sports experience at all, we recommend contacting the Takamaka team before booking to confirm the trip is the right fit.

Where exactly does the kayak day trip start? What is Cap Higer?

Departure is from Hendaye, 30 minutes from Biarritz. Cap Higer is the rocky headland that closes the Txingudi bay on the Spanish side — a mythical point on the French-Spanish border that marks the entry into the wildest coastal zones of the Basque Country. Beyond this cape lie the coves unreachable on foot and the pink limestone cliffs that make this itinerary truly unique.

Do I need to bring food for the day?

Yes. For a 7-hour day at sea, bringing your own lunch and enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day is essential. Pack foods that are easy to carry and eat outdoors, and bring more water than you think you'll need — the effort of paddling in warm weather can be significant.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Swimming ability is generally recommended for any open-water sea activity, and particularly for a full day out. The CE-certified life jacket provided ensures buoyancy in the event of a capsize.

Is the full-day kayak trip physically demanding?

Seven hours of paddling at sea puts real demands on the shoulders, back, and core — it's a genuine physical effort that shouldn't be underestimated, even with a 1/5 difficulty rating. Instructors manage the pace according to the group's level and conditions. A reasonable general fitness level is recommended to fully enjoy the day without running out of energy halfway through.

Does the trip run in bad weather or rough sea?

Safety always comes first. If conditions are unfavourable — strong winds, heavy swell, or poor visibility — Takamaka may cancel or reschedule the day. Contact the team before your session to understand the applicable cancellation and refund policy.

Can we book the kayak day for a group or stag party?

Absolutely — the full-day kayak trip from Hendaye is an excellent option for a sporty stag do, a group of outdoor enthusiasts, or a genuine team-building experience on the Basque Coast. For group bookings, contact Takamaka directly on 05.59.24.11.84 or at biarritz@takamaka.fr.
